Understanding the Benefits of Wellness & Preventative Care
For many pet owners, taking a pet to the vet only happens when their pet is not feeling their best. However, like their humans, pets need to see their doctor regularly in order to stay on top of their health. We recommend that most pets should see us once a year. In some cases, we may recommend more frequent visits for pets with certain conditions, ages, or other medical concerns. Our team of highly experienced veterinarians will help you find a cadence that works for you and your pet.
At Varina Veterinary Clinic, your pet’s annual wellness exam includes the following:
- A nose-to-tail physical exam
- Routine laboratory testing
- Parasite prevention
- Vaccinations
Each of these parts of your pet’s annual wellness exam gives us a wealth of information about your pet’s health and condition. By taking a careful look at your pet, we are able to construct a profile of your pet’s health that will guide our future treatment of your pet. We take the time to get to know both you and your pet. We want to understand things about your pet’s behavior, personality, and lifestyle so that we can better treat them. We will ask you questions about their favorite foods and toys, and if you are experiencing any behavioral issues. We like to have a full picture of your pet before we make recommendations as to your pet’s health.
The benefit of these wellness exams contributes dramatically to our ability to prevent future diseases. For example, keeping your pet’s vaccinations up to date will help them avoid certain communicable diseases. We update your pet’s vaccinations every year during their wellness exam. There are basic vaccinations that every pet needs, but, depending on your pet’s lifestyle, we may recommend other vaccinations in addition to the standard suite.
Prioritizing your pet’s health means that you will be able to enjoy many happy, healthy years of companionship. We know that your pet is part of your family. We endeavor to treat your pet with every bit of care and compassion that we would give to our own pets.

“They truly love your pet! Piper had to be seen urgently and I was so nervous something was really wrong. They took their time with Piper and I even in the crazy busy schedule they had!”
